Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is used as a flavor enhancer
with an umami taste that intensifies the meaty, savory flavor of food and
balances, blends, and rounds the perception of other tastes. It is found
naturally in tomatoes, cheese, mushrooms, and other foods. Add it to soups,
stews, stir-fries, gravy and sauces, or sprinkle directly onto steaks, pork
chops, and chicken to boost that savory flavor. Despite the bad rap MSG has
received over the years, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has given it a
“generally recognized as safe” designation.
